New Year Special Issue, Pratyaksha, the Daily


The unending misery and suffering of fellow citizens touched the heart of this Mahatma (great soul). His clothing was representative of his half-naked, starving brothers. For the sake of pathetic helpless, his hands reached out for a unique weapon - The Charkha

The wheel of charkha turned, gathered momemtum, fuelled by (drawing strenght from) the moral strength of this Mahatma. That was the moment that the charkha became a symbol of the light for Indian independence as also a means of karmayog (Discipline of Action) for the patriots. For the Indian, it is therefore a mark of commitment, devotion and sacrifice. But has it been reduced to a mere symbol and nothing more? Certainly not! The wheel of the Mahatma's charkha is in fact gathering speed and spinning at reassuring and definite pace.
